Brena Baja Holidays

Travel Agent's View

Travel Agents View ...ideally suited to couples and families seeking a quiet and relaxing holiday surrounded by natural beauty.

The municipality of Brena Baja is located on the east coast of La Palma and offers stunning scenery of rugged mountains and green hills which are ideal for walking and hiking. Brenja Baja is a quiet town which is usually overlooked by tourists for livelier resorts such as Santa Cruz or Playa de Los Cancajos. Brena Baja is therefore ideally suited to couples and families seeking a quiet and relaxing holiday surrounded by natural beauty.

The resort offers a handful of hotels and restaurants, for a greater variety of dining and entertainment options Santa Cruz is approx a 5 minute drive or a half an hour stroll away.

Santa Cruz de La Palma airport is located 12 km away with a transfer time of approx 30 minutes.

La Palma Insider ...a great base for walking, or for exploring the rest of the island by car...

Breña Baja is a small place, with no big attractions outside Los Cancajos Beach, but it has its own quiet charm.

The municipality is triangular, sloping down from the central ridge to the sea. The hillside is criss-crossed with hiking trails, and dotted with houses, some of which are very old and full of character. You can drive almost to the summit of Montaña las Breñas and get an amazing view for very little effort. And a little below, on the road to Mazo, lies a very popular barbecue and picnic site. You bring your own food and charcoal, but the town hall has provided grills, a water supply, toilets, and a kids play area. That last bit's important if your barbecues are as hopelessly unpunctual as mine.

Breña Baja is a great base for walking, or for exploring the rest of the island by car, and quite close to several riding stables.

Paradors are a national chain of hotels in Spain. The one on La Palma is modern, but it still manages to feel rather like a National Trust property. We occasionally pop in for a posh coffee, although I've never tried the restaurant.

My favourite place to eat in Breña Baja is Svampi pizzeria in San Jose, which gets lots of custom from the Italians who work at the Galileo Telescope. San Pancracio, also in San Jose, specialises in Venezuelan dishes, and La Cancelita, just below the road to the airport, serves unpretentious, nicely cooked, and if you go to Cancajos, you can eat in a different place every night for two weeks
