Playa De Los Cancajos Holidays
Travel Agent's View
Playa de Los Cancajos is situated on the east coast of La Palma approx 4 km from the capital of Santa Cruz. Playa de Los Cancajos is the most popular resort with tourists and offers a good choice of holiday accommodation and dining options. The night-life here is the busiest on the island with the resort offering 2 night clubs and a selection of bars.
The beach here is made up of 3 bays within rocky coves with fine black volcanic sand and offers a safe place for swimming. The crystal clear waters are also ideal for scuba diving and snorkelling. Other activities widely available include horse riding, mountain biking, paragliding and tennis to name but a few.
Transfer time from the airport is approx 15-20 minutes.
Insider's View
Los Cancajos is the best beach on the island for small kids. Elsewhere, the big waves can be intimidating, but at Cancajos, a couple of artificial offshore islands tame the big Atlantic rollers. At the north end of the main beach, there's a giant rock pool with a sandy bottom and almost no waves at all – perfect for toddlers.Like all beaches on La Palma, the sand's black. When the sea grinds up black lava rocks, that's what you get. Since this is the east of the island, the beach does tend to cloud over in the late afternoon. Actually, in high summer, that can be an advantage, as the black sand occasionally gets too hot to walk on in bare feet. There are fresh water showers on the beach, plus changing rooms and toilets.
Just in from the beach, there's a pretty good array of eatteries, bars and souvenir shops, serving traditional Canarian food, Chinese, French and even Lebanese dishes, which is pretty cosmopolitan for the size of the place. The karaoke has a very good sound system, and some of the bars feature live music. Sadly, though, the Swiss cake shop has shut down, but perhaps that's a good thing for my waistline.
Just south of the beach there's a walkway along the top of low cliffs, and it's accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs. It also runs past an old salt factory. You can still see the ruins of the wind-powered water pumps used to lift the sea water, and the flat ponds where it was evaporated.
On the cliff above the village, there's a small stepped pyramid which dates from before the Spanish arrived.
If you want to explore more of the island, several businesses offer hire cars, and the bus service into Santa Cruz is pretty good.
